#1 I can be myself
In the heart of Hokkaido, North of Japan, the town of Higashikawa is situated at the foot of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Ranges. In the humble town there you can find Mt. Kitoushi which is a part of the “Craft Road”. It boasts one of its jewels in the art of porcelain-making, the gallery “Studio Rizomu”.
The owner of “Studio Rizomu”, Mr. Norihiro Takimoto came to the town of Higashikawa in 1980. He renovated an empty farmer warehouse with the help of his friends, and started a pottery studio as a business.
Mr. takimoto makes porcelain. His creations are also dishwasher and microwave safe. Mr. Takimoto’s policy is to “Create tableware that can be easily used by people.”
Mr. Takimoto shared the reason as to why he has chosen the town of Higashikawa to do his craft, “It is because of the good environment. It was not an easy choice between the city life and the country life, even though the city offers a lot of information, but, it can be very selective, while the country life is much more comfortable, since the good information has been thoroughly selected and has been circulating. I don’t have to compete with someone for something, and I am able to avoid psychological stress, too. And most importantly, I can be myself.”
